You've likely seen recap videos of dances like these. Kids that are impacted by special needs are paired with high school counterparts and they take the night by storm. And even though they've just met, something unique happens. What began only minutes earlier as, "Hi, it’s nice to meet you" has quickly graduated to, "I will step in front of a high-speed train to protect you."

It is love at first sight.

We lose our memory, eyesight, and coordination. Cancer overtakes us and anxiety overwhelms us. Sleep eludes, fear consumes and minds forget. The result of sin’s presence by the fall of man rears its ugly head until we can’t lift ours from the pillow. Such susceptibility took Christ’s breath away.

All it took was a sigh. Tim Keller saw the story as a profound picture of longing, sacrificial love, and the worthiness of a king. And I don’t disagree, of course. But I also see it as the epitome of hospitality. The quintessence. The archetype. In fact, if hospitality is the most ancient of ministries, this was history in the making.

Sometimes moments of purity invite themselves into our world without notice, permission, or apology. Those moments don’t always last.
